History;
Latvia is a small country located in in between Lithuania (Toris) and Estonia (Eduard), his two "big brothers". Countries nearby include Soviet Russia (Ivan), Belarus (Natalie), and Poland (Feliks), and because of Latvia's location, it has always been invaded by other, more larger countries. As for Latvia himself, this means that he has, for most of his life, been under the authority of other nations and has often been treated like a pet. What is known curently is that he was invaded by Germany, then acquired by Poland-Lithuania, then was split in half, and then was finally taken over by Russia, much to Latvia's horror. WW I was the worst time for Latvia; the need for his nation's independance became desperate and the peroid of hectic war caused him to fall extremely ill.

This depression was rewarded with an astounding victory: the defeat of Germany. Unfortunately this was bitter-sweet, as Latvia was forced to accept a mutual assistance ally with Soviet Russia, which put Latvia under the control of Russia (this also allowed the Russians to send 25, 000 soldiers onto Latvian territory). Once that happened, Latvia was sent to live with Russia-- which is where is being taken from.

Personality;

Raivis has a tolerant personality, but is extremely timid and a bit of a shut-in. He is frightened very, very easily, and tends to give off the impression of a trauma victim (Ivan [Russia]'s fault). He is a bit of a sap as well: he loves poetry and romance novels. In the comic, he is terrified to death of Ivan (literally: in one strip, Ivan shakes him and he "dies"), and is always trembling when he and Ivan are in the same room. Raivis often says and does things that Ivan has deemed prohibited, which Ivan happily takes as an excuse to smack him around everywhere. Raivis seems to have a lack of defensive capabilities, as was shown when he nearly had his head gnawed off by a sheep.

There are very few people that Raivis is comfortable around, though the older Baltic brothers, Toris (Lithuania) and Eduard (Estonia) are two of them (Peter [Sealand] can also be put in this cateogory. He is virtually the only person who can provoke a fire in Raivis, enough so to stand up to Ivan-- until Ivan beats him down again). This can be blamed on his anxiety and tendency to consider the frightening side of situations (another thing caused by Ivan's overpowering influence). Raivis is usually obedient and does what he is told out of fear, but despite this, he has been known to occaisonally stand up for himself-- even if it is extremely uncommon for him.
